Nödutfodringshägn behöver vara tillräckligt stora och placerade på mark där renarna trivs och kan skydda sig mot väder och vind. Myr eller gammal odlingsmark går bra, men det behöver också finnas skyddande skog i hägnet. Kuperad terräng är bra för omväxling och skydd. I sänkor uppstår ofta extrem kyla, så det är bra om renarna kan ta sig till högre höjd. Det behöver också gå att hålla torrt och rent i större delen av hagen.

  • För att kunna ha uppsikt över djuren är det viktigt att inte ha för många renar per hägn, helst inte fler än 500. Under känsliga perioder, som kalvning, bör det vara betydligt färre renar.
  • Hägnet måste vara tillräckligt stort. Hur stort beror på hur länge renarna ska vara där och väderförhållanden. Ett riktmärke för längre tids utfodring (över en månad) kan vara 10-15 renar per hektar (100×100 m). Vid utfodring på barmark gäller ca 10 renar per hektar.
  • Det ska finnas möjlighet att utöka hägnet vid behov. Dessutom behövs ett antal reservhagar om hygienen blir dålig eller ohälsa uppstår.
  • Håll utfodringsplatserna rena! Se mer under nödutfodring.
  • Ett hägn utan tillgång till ren snö innebär att hygienen fort blir dålig och att renen inte har tillgång till vatten. Vattenbehovet ökar när renen utfodras med pellets.
